Anatomy and Physiology: Ruth Gilmore PhD
Ruth Gilmore PhD was a full-time lecturer at the Queen’s University of Belfast for many years, first in Physiology and then in Anatomy, until she took early retirement in order to devote more time to yoga. In 1996 she qualified as a yoga teacher with the Yoga Fellowship of Northern Ireland (the governing body of yoga in Northern Ireland), and has since acquired additional training and expertise in the use of yoga for medical conditions and pregnancy. She has completed the Viniyoga Britain Stage One and Stage Two training, and is much influenced in her practice by her experience with teachers from the lineage of Desikachar. From 2000 -2008 she ran her own studio in Belfast, providing general classes and yoga therapy sessions. In 2008 Ruth and her husband moved to Surrey to be nearer to family, including a newly-arrived grandchild.
Since 1996 Ruth has been closely involved with the Yoga Biomedical Trust. She has been responsible for both course planning and Anatomy and Physiology tuition on the YBT Yoga Therapy Diploma course, and is now involved in yoga therapy workshops being jointly organised by the YBT and Yogacampus [formerly The Life Centre (Education) Ltd]. Ruth has presented numerous educational and training courses on yoga, anatomy and medical topics in the UK, Republic of Ireland and elsewhere, and offers a wide variety of day and weekend workshops, including CPD days for the British Wheel of Yoga and other organisations. Ruth particularly enjoys sharing her unique combination of yoga and medical knowledge with other yoga teachers, so that they too can feel confident working with students in all circumstances.
Ruth also writes a popular monthly column in Yoga and Health, and has contributed to a number of yoga books. She is the author of “Relieving Stress” in the Yoga for Living series (Dorling Kindersley, 2002).
